Abstract
This study introduces the results of descriptive statistical analyses from the 『2024 Public Perception Survey on Refugee (PPSR)』, conducted by the Kangwon Institute for Unification Studies (KIUS) at the Kangwon National University. The purpose of the survey is to comprehensively understand South Koreans’ perceptions of refugees, attitudes toward refugee acceptance, and perspectives on government’s refugee policies. In South Korea, refugee issues tend to attract only temporary attention during specific events, such as the 2018 Jeju Yemeni Refugee Crisis. As a result, the lack of systematic data collection has hindered effective policymaking and the formation of social consensus. Refugee issues are inherently complex, involving intersections across international and domestic politics, economics, society, and culture. Starting in 2024, the KIUS will conduct the survey annually to monitor changes in South Koreans’ attitudes and perceptions toward refugees and analyze the factors influencing these changes. Ultimately, the findings will contribute to developing effective and sustainable refugee policies in South Korea.
